Hi there!

Summers Are For Celebrating!

It’s all about summer in northern California, doing all those things we love to do in (and out) of the sun, and taking advantage of the longer days and cooler nights. Summers are for celebrating

We’re busier than ever it seems. Between all that we have to, need to, and want to do for our loved ones, our friends, and our jobs, we must remember to take care of ourselves. There’s many reasons why we aren’t taking time each day for that “me” time we need so badly. And many of those reasons are darn good ones. With calendars overloaded, sometimes the only way to take a breather is to hide under the bed for a quick 20 winks…

Don’t despair. We have a few suggestions that can help you with that. And remember, you’re definitely worth it!

Remember to Breath

Sounds simple enough, but this is one of those things we take for granted and rarely pay attention to. When things get hectic and those stress levels begin to rise, take a few seconds, close your eyes, and take a deep breath. Then another. And another. Count to 7 as you breath in, count to 7 as you hold it, then count to 7 as you release. Repeat that process several times, and try to focus on your breathing a little more as you’re going through your day. Your blood pressure will thank you.

Turn Off the Electronics

There are plenty of experts out there who will tell you exactly how many hours, minutes and seconds we spend every day in front of our phones, computers, and tv’s. They will also tell you how much time we spent with social media and devouring news sites, as well. Take a step or two back, and establish boundaries. Maybe you could decide on no more news after 5 or 6, or maybe you could record your favorite shows and watch them later when you can fast forward during the commercials, and go to bed a little bit earlier, or maybe you could reduce your time on Facebook® or Twitter® and take that time for a nap, or a manicure. You get the idea.

Celebrate Yourself

Humans are amazing beings. We have so many incredibly fantastic talents, each with our own unique gifts. So CELEBRATE YOURSELF! Remembering those gifts helps us to give ourselves a much needed break. Sometimes we’re our worst critic. Let’s stop that.

Take a Walk

You can officially classify this as daily exercise if you want, but taking a walk has many more benefits. Like… mood boosting, muscle stretching, vitamin D soaking, cheek glowing benefits. Like, dogtail-wagging happy, enjoying the fresh air strutting, feeling pretty dang good smiling benefits. Get a neighborhood walk going every day. Leave your phone at your desk and take a walk after lunch. Leave the dishes for a bit and take a family walk after dinner, and you’ll have a better excuse for dessert.

Indulge in your Hobbies

Reading a good mystery, refinishing that antique dresser, or hitting garage sales on the weekend…whatever your thing is – just do it. Give yourself the permission to be a couch potato all day Sunday if you want to. It’s ok, you can take some time to do the things you love to do. Your excitement makes your loved ones happy, too.

Meal Time Shift

You probably have more than enough people in your life talking about this, and so we won’t do that. Just a reminder that even small adjustments in the kitchen can provide big bonuses with your health, your energy levels, and your ability to handle those stressful days. A few ideas: substitute herbs for salt or other sodium based flavorings, add more of your favorite veggies to your sauces or casseroles, eat a salad before your meal, and try taking more advantage of the pre-cut vegetablesand other healthier options at the grocery. Try weighing and measuring everything you use in your meals for a week and we bet you’ll discover how many extra portions, fats, and more you’re feeding your family than you thought.

Get Support

Caring for our aging loved ones can be a challenging experience, including a plethora of red tape, difficult decisions, and hard-to-find financial solutions during one of the most stressful periods of our lives. Check your local and state government’s website to get started with your search, or look online for the national organization, which should have more details about local chapters. Check with local churches and schools for recommendations, and let the grapevine work for you.

You do not have to do it alone. Our team here at Senior Care of Sacramento has helped many of our clients in finding and connecting with support groups, state and federal resources, and other needed assistance in discovering more options.

For over 20 years, Therese Johnson and our team have been fierce advocates for the improvement and enhancement of our senior’s quality of life. We’re honored to continue helping our clients and their loved ones when the time is right.

To your health!
