Free Referral & Placement
Most senior care placement referrals are made by sales agents with little or no background in eldercare. At Senior Care of Sacramento, you benefit from hands-on experience in the field, as well as personalized service by our CEO, Therese Johnson. Therese has 16 years of experience working in acute eldercare, long-term care eldercare, and residential eldercare in varying capacities – namely, as a certified gerontologist, nurse’s assistant, continuing education provider, and as owner administrator of a Residential Care Community for the Elderly of her own in Auburn. In addition, she is an Alzheimer’s specialist and Reiki master who successfully has reversed the degenerative process of Alzheimer’s in her clients, and she is a senior citizen advocate who revolutionized elderly care by sponsoring and facilitating the passage of the Assisted Living Waiver Pilot Project (legislative bill AB 499).
Our goal is to fully understand your needs, whether for yourself or your loved one: How much, if any, professional medical attention do you require? What are your physical abilities and limitations? Do you want to stay at home or move to a senior care community? In which geographic area do you want to live? What kind of social or spiritual community are you seeking? What is your budget? Once we have identified the factors of your ideal environment and budget, we will recommend the course of action that best meets your needs.
If you choose senior home care, we will connect you with a local resource network, guide you through each step of setting up the ideal home care environment, and provide ongoing support as long as you need it. An assessment and referral by the Stegner Registry to appropriate facilities will minimize the chances of rejection occurring. If there are specific concerns the Registry is available for consultation.
If you choose a senior care community, we will recommend one that is your optimal match. We draw from Therese Johnson’s personal experience visiting and evaluating Independent Living communities, Room & Board houses, Assisted Living communities, and Residential Care with Dementia communities in Sacramento, Placer, Nevada, El Dorado, Yuba, and Yolo counties, as well as large “Continuing Care Retirement Communities” that combine independent living, assisted living, and nursing care in one community.
Once you choose a senior community, we will serve as your representative and advocate – arranging all the details for the transfer, educating you on how to benefit from social services in the area, and providing you with ongoing advice and support after the transition. If you choose to move to a senior care community, our services will be free of charge to you.

FAQ Section
Are your placement services really free?
Yes. Our free referral and placement services cost $0 when someone is referred and placed to assisted living, memory care, independent living, or in-home care within 90 days. You only pay monthly rent to the senior care facility. This includes assessment, facility matching, transfer arrangement, education on social services, and ongoing advice/support after transition.
What is the difference between assisted living and board & care homes?
Board & Care homes are smaller residential houses serving 6 or fewer residents with a 3:1 caregiver ratio, providing room, board, and 24-hour staffing assistance in a home setting. Assisted Living facilities are larger with a ~14:1 caregiver ratio, greater overhead, and more complex services, costing more. Both provide robust activities, help with daily living (dressing, bathing, medication management), and are licensed 24/7. Board & Care enables more independence in an intimate setting.
What is the Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver (ALW) program?
The Medi-Cal Assisted Living Waiver provides assisted living services for California residents who are elderly or disabled and require nursing home level of care. Eligibility requirements include: (1) Enrolled or applied for Medi-Cal, (2) Eligible for Medi-Cal with no share of cost, (3) 21+ years old with a disability, (4) Eligible for nursing home level of care. We provide Medi-Cal consulting to help you qualify and access these benefits.
Do you help with in-home care?
Yes. Our in-home care services include: (1) Connecting you with local in-home care resources, (2) Guiding you through setting up the ideal home care environment, (3) Providing ongoing support, (4) Creating “circles of care” involving family/friends/community for driving, shopping, and companionship. Assessment and referral minimizes rejection chances at facilities.
What advocacy services do you provide?
We serve as your representative and advocate by: (1) Arranging all transfer details to senior care communities, (2) Educating you on how to benefit from local social services, (3) Providing ongoing advice and support after transition, (4) Full day to day Geriatric referral services also available upon request, (5) Coordinating across all medical/care providers, (6) Monitoring care quality in facilities, (7) Advocating for pro-eldercare legislation (Therese passed AB 499).
