When we are caring for someone with dementia, the day may seem daunting.  Not only caring for yourself, but helping another person take care of personal, daily tasks that normally get done unnoticed or unplanned.  Here are a few ideas that may help plan the day.

Create the “typical” day for your loved one/client.  Include normal daily tasks (dressing, grooming, eating) along with activities that stimulate the mind, body, and soul.
No need for planning every minute of the day. Be flexible so you have time for your needs to be met as well, which will relieve anxiety for you both.
Remember that quiet time is an activity too.  As long as there is enough stimulation throughout the week.
There are plenty of engaging activities in daily chores around the house.  From wiping down counters in the kitchen, to folding laundry in the bedroom.  Use your own tasks as a chance to engage and entertain.
Take cues from your loved one, is the schedule you have created something that seems to be pleasant or creating more anxiety?
Plan ahead, be ready with a “plan B” for everything.  Keep 2 of the things you use in your day on hand, to make it easier to cue your loved one to participate.
Activities are meant to empower and give a person self-worth, does not necessarily have to be based on reality.  ie: If your loved one likes folding socks, maybe buying a basketful of socks just for them to fold could be a great activity.

People with dementia still have emotions, we always need to remember to validate and accept their feelings and perceptions of the world around them.  Doing that will help to make them feel safe, secure, and confident.
